Our trip to Catalina Island

We took our first open ocean trip to the Island of Catalina, 26 miles west of Los Angeles, on June 6th.  It was eventful only because I didn't get seasick!  It took us about 4.5 hours going 7 knots and it was glorious.

We stayed for two nights in Avalon, which is a very tiny town with very few cars, but has a rich history.  It was home to the movie industry in it's early days.  Marilyn Monroe lived here, Clark Gable starred in Mutiny on the Bounty here.  Natalie Wood visited often with her husband Robert Wagner.  She was later found north of Avalon in Two Harbors, having drowned stepping off her boat into the water while trying to access the dinghy.  It was owned by Wrigley of both gum and baseball fame, and the Cubs used the island for spring training for many years.  We played golf on a 9-hole course built by Wrigley in 1898, one of the oldest courses west of the Mississippi.

We returned after 4 nights.  We set the boat on autopilot, put some chairs on the bow and just let the wind and the sun be upon us.
